Cashewnut Tree Bungalows – perfect for those on a budget or staying a little bit longer

Cashewnut Tree Bungalows began life as a group of eight inexpensive bungalows located just off the main street, a short walk from the beach in Kantiang Bay. Each bungalow boasts clean tiled floors, wooden window shutters and is simply furnished with either fan or aircon, double bed, en-suite bathroom with cold water shower and a small terrace outside. They are particularly popular with longer-stay visitors and backpackers on a budget.

Then just last high season, Cashewnut Tree Bungalows added four deluxe bungalows to their bungalow family. This air-conditioned accommodation sits slightly further up the hill and offers hot shower, wall-mounted flat screen TV, fridge and private balcony.

Now this year, Jeab from Phad Thai Rock N Roll has taken over Cashewnut Tree Bungalows. In a bid for world domination, Jeab is adding a Khao Geng Restaurant to Cashewnut Tree Bungalows. (Khao Geng means a variety of curry dishes, set out under a glass counter – fast food but home cooked and Thai style). We’re all waiting with anticipation to sample his selection of curries, which will be utterly delicious with a unique twist, if Phad Thai Rock N Roll food is anything to go by.

The owners have also put considerable thought and care into gardening around the bungalows. So while Cashewnut Tree might not be high-end accommodation, these extra touches make it a little more special then your average budget accommodation.

[editor’s review:]
PLUS – Very good value for money at the budget-end of the scale, there will be free WIFI in the restaurant and the rooms are clean, quiet and just a short walk from the beach, bars, local shops and restaurants. Now with the addition of the higher spec rooms, guests can still benefit from low prices but with a little bit more luxury built in.

MINUS – Free WIFI does not reach to all the bungalows. There are no mosquito-nets inside the accommodation or on the windows so if you’re coming for a longer stay you should bring your own. If it’s been raining, there’s sometimes a muddy area to negotiate to get to your bungalow.

  1. Update for season 2011-12

Cashewnut Tree Bungalows are no longer managed by Cait and Ned. They’re not far away – they’ve moved just next door onto the main road to concentrate on their family business: Freedom Adventures – tailor-made island hopping and snorkeling trips & tours.

Cashewnut Tree Bungalows have reverted back to being run by the family who ran the resort in previous years.

The bar and book-swop corner are no longer there and the restaurant is open sporadically, although there are plans to re-open the restaurant more full-time in the future.

The main, basic facilities remain the same with free WIFI available in the main communal area, large, clean, good-value-for-money rooms in a quiet and peaceful location.
