Restaurant Review: Som Tum

Som Tum’s charm comes from its friendly owners, community like atmosphere and simple and traditional Thai food.

Just up the main road in Kantiang Bay past 7-11, you’ll see a small hobbled together shelter with some tables and chairs and a BBQ out front. This humble establishment should not be overlooked. Inside this tiny restaurant you will find some of the yummiest and most traditional Thai food in Kantiang Bay. Over the years, they have expanded their menu to include phad thai and fried rice, perhaps to attract more tourists but the best items to try on the menu are what you see the locals eating. They do really nice Thai salads like som tum (spicy papaya salad) or similar versions with cucumber or green beans. Usually, Thais will eat one of these spicy salads with a piece of BBQ chicken and a side of sticky rice. They also make amazing “larb” (spicy minced meat salad with Thai herbs) which is also really yummy with a side of sticky rice.

The couple who own the restaurant – Mr. and Mrs Som Tum are super friendly. They speak a little Engish but it doesn’t really matter as they’re always smiling and welcoming. They’re super keen on seeing visitors sit down and sample local food – you can tell as Mr. Som Tum serves every plate of food with a pride and a smile

PLUS: very authentic, very delicious Thai food and very cheap! Meat salads for about 80THB and som tum and veggie based salads for 40THB

MINUS: If your going to sit down here mid-day then it can be very hot as you are on the road away from the beach.
